The Launch: March 12th

On March 12th Save the Children in Iceland launched their global debate on education and peace with a panel event held in a primary school. The event was attended by over 100 children, teachers and participants from other humanitarian organisations in the area. Specialists on the issues, such as the Director for International and Security Affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, launched the panel discussion, but children were put at the forefront of the debate

The contribution from children was a great boost to the debate. Groups of 14 year olds were given three weeks to prepare their opinions on the topic as part of their social studies learning. The children were given the freedom to research and approach the topic in whatever way they chose, and presented their views with short movies, interviews, music and a plays. The children were keen to compare the lives of Icelandic children and those children from countries affected by conflict.  Their message was very clear, "These children need help and we can help them".
