Haiti

The Situation

With many of the Latin America and Carribbean region's worst development indicators, Haiti's children and families face tremendous challenges in their daily lives. The country has long endured political and social division, not least exemplified in two international military interventions.

The average primary school teacher in Haiti has completed just one year of secondary school - the poor quality of teaching, in combination with an outdated curriculum that is not relevant to students' lives, has led to high levels of student dropout and repetition, especially in the early grades of primary school.

Our Target

We need the international community to create a climate in which Haiti has the resources, capability, and stability to meet educational goals for 2010. We will support the Government of Haiti to do this by:

  • Providing 60,000 scholarships to make basic education affordable for poor families
  • Improving school infrastructure standards and frequency of building inspections
  • Rehabilitating and building new schools and classrooms, and providing second shift classes to increase children's access
  • Establishing early childhood development programs to ensure children survive and thrive
  • Training teachers, administrators, and communities on child rights and non-violent discipline

How Haiti measures up

  • Only 66 % of children between six and twelve are currently enrolled in school
  • Each year, more than half a million children do not have access to basic education
  • Only one third of children who attend primary school make it to grade five
  • Only 11 % of primary schools are licensed by the Ministry of Education
