Rewrite the Future - Where

Indonesia

The Situation

Indonesia is struggling with the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, a Tsunami and earthquakes of devastating proportions, inadequate infrastructure and high unemployment. Reports of ongoing conflicts in various parts of the country fuel fears of fragmentation and calls for repression - there has been a long-standing struggle to guarantee human security and development in Indonesia.
Around half of the estimated 100 million children in Indonesia live in poverty, exacerbating the effects of conflict and natural disasters on their survival and development. Two and a half million children in total are estimated to be out of school. Those children who are in school often face violence in the classroom; violence perpetrated by teachers against children as well as violence between children is common.
