Sri Lanka
The Situation
In Sri Lanka, armed conflict between ethnic groups erupted in 1983 and has been present for the past two decades.
The government signed a ceasefire agreement with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in 2002, and had several rounds of peace talks. However, the ceasefire ended on 19 January 2008 following growing hostilities over the past two years.
All of the children in Sri Lanka have been affected by the armed conflict - all over the country people have lost relatives and neighbours, 64,000 have been kil
led and young boys and girls have been recruited into the armed forces. 362,000 people have been internally displaced in camps for 10 years.
Our Target
We are helping the Sri Lankan Government to ensure that children affected by conflict will succeed in safe, quality schools with relevant content, strong learning environments and parent and community participation.
In particular we will:
- Reduce by at least 30% the number of children not enrolled in early learning and basic education in the areas we work in
- Reduce violence on and by children and strengthen skills for emergency preparedness and protection against HIV/AIDS in target schools
- Help teachers improve their quality of teaching enabling students to complete their syllabi without recourse to external tuition classes
- Ensure that children's learning outcomes are equalized across provinces by prioritising distribution of education funds
How Sri Lanka measures up
-
Countrywide, the net enrolment in grade one is believed to be 97%, 95% of children complete grade 5
-
Marginalised groups are children with disabilities, children from remote rural areas, nomadic populations, plantation children and the poor
-
Gender equity is reported
-
The Sri Lanka Government spends over 5% of the GDP on defence and about 2.9% of the GDP on education - this means that in South Asia only Pakistan and Bangladesh spend less than Sri Lanka, with other countries investing more in education and achieving high literacy rates
