In war and conflict, children are the most vulnerable – they may lose family members, as well as their homes and schools and face numerous threats to their well-being, including emotional distress. Save the Children urgently needs help to reach more children and families affected by the Russia/Georgia conflict with life-saving supplies.
Save the Children welcomes the agreement on the cessation of violence and underscores the need for humanitarian organizations to have secure conditions and unrestricted access to conflict-affected areas including Gori and South Ossetia. We urgently need to reach these areas to assess children’s needs and to provide humanitarian assistance, where needed.
We are preparing to initially reach 3,500 children and families affected by the crisis and expect to broaden our response in the next few days after completing rapid assessments to determine where families are and what they most need.
Save the Children’s neutrality, impartiality and independence are key to our ability to assist vulnerable children and families. The most effective way to get humanitarian aid to children and families is through trusted, existing on-the-ground, non-governmental organizations like Save the Children. Save the Children staff, local partners and volunteers are helping to assemble and distribute relief items.
As one of the largest NGOs working in Georgia, Save the Children is participating in meetings called by U.N. officials and other NGOs to plan a coordinated response to the crisis. Save the Children is providing child-focused expertise in emergency food relief, shelter, non-food relief, children's protection and their health and nutrition. For over a decade, Save the Children has focused on the needs of Georgia's most vulnerable populations, including street children and displaced families, as well as assisting communities in meeting basic needs in health, education, and livelihoods.
We are acting quickly to provide life-saving assistance to thousands of children and families forced to flee their homes due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Georgia. We are initially focusing on providing clean water, food, shelter and medical supplies, and have already reached nearly 400 displaced people in Rustavi and Sagarejo with 10-day food packages that include biscuits, rice, canned meat, canned fish, buckwheat, pasta, porridge and tea.
We call for your help to reach children and families in need, so please donate generously to our appeal. Thank you.
