The true extent of violence against women is difficult to ascertain, as most incidents of sexual assault and domestic violence are unreported. However, a survey undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2005 showed that:
Save the Children Australia’s Domestic & Family Violence Program, Family Support Program and Alternative Care Program aims to assist these families who are in need of support.
Our Domestic & Family Violence Program, which operates in Queensland, provides services for women and children who have experienced family violence. Children who witness domestic violence are often severely traumatised, and children who have lived in an abusive environment may perpetuate the abuse and violence themselves later in life.
Our Family Support Program in Queensland provides therapeutic counselling, via practical support and outreach to families experiencing the effects of poverty, homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction and domestic violence.
The Alternative Care Program, which Save the Children Australia runs in Queensland, is two residential care services providing placement options and outreach for young women in the statutory care of the Department of Child Safety.
These services provide support and opportunities for personal development for both young women and their families. It provides skill development, education and life skills in a safe environment that meets cultural, social and emotional needs.
