Services for women and children who have experienced family violence. (Children who witness domestic violence are often severely traumatised. Children who have lived in an abusive environment may perpetuate the abuse and violence themselves later in life.)
A Family Support Service that provides therapeutic counselling, via practical support and out- reach to families experiencing the effects of poverty, homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction and domestic violence.
A Future Parents Program, presented as ‘The Basic Babysitting Course’, that is designed to equip young people with practical child care knowledge and skills and personal self-development. The young people Save the Children seeks to attract to the Future Parents Program are often those at risk of leaving the education system prematurely, and at risk of early pregnancy and long-term unemployment. As a Registered Training Organisation, Save the Children delivers its Certificate IV in Facilitating Abuse Prevention Programs which allows presenters who have successfully completed the course to deliver the Future Parents Program’s courses to young people in their communities.
Two residential care services providing placement options and outreach for young women in the statutory care of the Department of Child Safety. These services provide support and opportunities for personal development both for young women and their families; skill development in relation to education and living skills provided in a safe environment that meets their cultural, social and emotional needs. The program also provides an outreach service to young people and the Semi Independent Living Project supports young people during their transition from care.
'Speaking Out' is Save the Children’s free speaker service for schools, which is giving voice to the desperately poor children of this world who cannot tell their own stories.. Our trained school speakers are available to bring to life the issues and real-life stories of children around the world. Their presentations are practical, fun and memorable, as well as supporting curriculum teaching.
Speaking Out involves volunteer speakers attending primary and secondary schools to inform students about the work of Save the Children. For full details please refer to our Speaking Out page.
