The Minority Women’s Livelihood Creation Project aims to provide skills, knowledge and opportunities for ethnic Hmong and Khmu women to develop their own sustainable livelihoods. The project is based in Khop and Xieng Hone, two of the poorest and most remote districts in Sayaboury Province. Poverty levels are high, food shortages occur annually and female literacy is low. Vocational training is provided within the culture and local environment on topics including fi sh and frog raising, livestock and cookery. The training supports income generation which helps to create a sustainable livelihood for women and their families. A credit fund has also been established and microfinance training is available. These microfinance activities seek to empower ethnic minority women and enhance their skills, confidence and motivation. Women from the community manage the credit system.
