Primary Health Care Project

The Primary Health Care Project is improving the health of people - particularly women and children - in Sayaboury Province which, when the project started, had the worst health indicators in the country.

In the 15 years the project has been operating, our work has helped the province achieve two of the Millennium Development Goals – the maternal mortality rate is down to 77 per 100,000 live births compared to the national average of 430 per 100,000 (which is less than ¼ of the national average), and the infant mortality rate is 14 per 1,000 live births compared to the national average of 70 per 1,000 (less than 1/3 of the national average).  These outcomes earned our Laos team a 2007 United Nations Development Award, the second United Nations award for the team.

We are now replicating this successful project in the neighbouring province of Luang Prabang.  A maternal and children’s health clinic has been built and general health clinics will also be established in Nan District.  Mobile health teams will reach remote families who are unable to attend the clinics.

Training will be held for health workers, which will focus on medical practices as well as the management of health facilities and increasing data collection and record keeping skills.
