Our HIV and AIDS programme is based in Port Moresby, Lae, Madang, Kainantu, Goroka, and rural Ungai -Bena District. Save the Children’s work contributes to arresting the growth of the HIV epidemic in PNG and thus helps in reducing the impacts of HIV and AIDS on the lives of children.
Globally young people are at heightened vulnerability to HIV, accounting for 50% of all HIV infections, and 5,000 – 6,000 become newly infected every day. YOP aims to reduce the negative impacts of HIV and AIDS in PNG by improving safe sex practices and well-being amongst out-of-school and jobless youth (15 – 25 year-olds).
The project works through recruiting, training and supporting teams of youth peer educators to disseminate messages about safe sex, build knowledge and skills, distribute condoms and information, education and communication materials, and to provide basic psychosocial support and referral to service providers on a peer to peer basis.
The Poro Sapot Project aims to reduce the negative impacts of HIV and AIDS in PNG by improving safe sex practices and well-being amongst two key vulnerable groups, women in sex work and men who have sex with men.
Peer-mediated outreach prevention strategies (including condom promotion and word-of-mouth dissemination of safe sex messages) are complemented by strategies to increase access to health service providers, improve the skills and knowledge of the target groups, and advocate for the protection of rights with police and others.
This project combats HIV and STI transmission at specific sites like major towns and transport routes where transmission is known to be highly prevalent.
Save the Children works in partnership with Government services to improve the prevention and management of common STI among young people and vulnerable groups, aiming to introduce STI/ VCT services at a Lopi urban clinic in Goroka, strengthen existing services at the Kainantu White House STI clinic, and strengthen services at Segerei clinic in rural Bena sub-district.
