Children and Young People in Conflict with Law Project

The Children and Young People in Conflict with the Law project aims to reduce the potentially harmful impact of the judicial system on children and young people, by ensuring the Solomon Islands judicial systems meet international standards for child protection.

The project activities focus on providing training and awareness to members of the juvenile judicial system and community police to be more aware of the risks children and young people face when they are in conflict with the law. The project also facilitates the reintegration of young people and children emerging from custody back into the community.

Forty Crime Prevention Committees have been formed across Solomon Islands to prevent children and youth’s crime. Over 400 members of the committees, including young people, have been trained on the risk factors that can lead to breaking the law, implications of breaking the law and how different law enforcement agencies work for accused.

There are reports from police post and the committees about the reduction of youth and children crime rates in some communities.

In the past year, 40 police officers and 20 correction service officers were trained in child rights and international standards of juvenile justice.
