The Government of Vanuatu ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1992 signaling its commitment to children and their rights. These rights include the right to education, health, and support services that will ensure the child’s survival and full development.
The Government officially appointed a National Children’s Committee (NCC) in 2001, comprising representatives of government and non-government organisations, to advise the government on all issues affecting the situation of children.
Save the Children Australia (SCA) is working closely with the NCC to improve the lives of children in Vanuatu by promoting and supporting their rights through raising awareness, training and the development of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials. SCA implements a number of activities including training workshops for government and community members, and produces radio programs, posters and quarterly newsletters for the wider community. Future aspects of the project include advocacy work and child participation, as well as the introduction of child rights programming across all of Vanuatu’s SCA programs.
