Toronto, ON (June 25, 2007) Each year Save The Children releases an annual progress report called 'State of The World's Mothers 2006: Saving The Lives of Mothers and Newborns'. The 2006 study concluded that various low-cost solutions, such as a tetanus shot, and ensuring that newborn babies' heads are kept warm after birth could significantly reduce the mortality rate amongst newborn babies worldwide. Moreover, the research presented in this study drew attention to the stunning fact that over 2 million newborns die each year in the first 24 hours of life in the developing world.
The idea of knitting caps for newborns in Africa caught on all across North America. Since May 2006, knitters and crocheters across Canada mailed in over 10,000 caps. The campaign closed on March 15, 2007 and the caps have now been shipped to Burkina Faso and Kenya where they were deeply appreciated by the mothers in our programs.
