Child Rights and Child Participation

Save the Children Canada champions the right of all children to a happy, healthy and secure childhood. Our mission since 1921 has been to improve the quality of children's lives through the realization of their rights.

At Save the Children Canada, our work is guided by the following principles derived from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC):

  • Children have rights to be listened to, to freely express their views on all matters that affect them, and to freedom of expression, thought, association and access to information.
  • Measures should be put in place to encourage and facilitate their participation in accordance with their age and maturity.
  • Participation should promote the best interest of the child and enhance the personal development of each child.
  • All children have equal rights to participate without discrimination.
  • All children have the right to be protected from manipulation, violence, abuse and exploitation.

The Convention has been endorsed by virtually all governments. We work for a world where children of all nations are granted all of the rights within the UNCRC, and thus grow up safely and in good health, as educated citizens of their country and of the world.

Over the years our programmes have always strived to create support for children to take part in decisions that affect them and their communities.

We advocate with governments and international communities to change public policy and private practice that violate children's rights.

Save the Children Canada works with local communities, governments, foundations, corporations, and national and international agencies to create programs to bring positive change to the world's children.
