Save the Children in Ethiopia is active in all areas important to the survival, protection and development of children. We deliver services essential to children, develop capacity of professionals, NGOs and children themselves, we conduct research on children's issues and advocate for policy change.
Save the Children has been present in Ethiopia since 1965. The Save the Children members in Ethiopia are Canada, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States. We work separately but in coordination and partnership with one another and share common vision and values.
We work in all the regionsl of the country from communities all the way up to the national level. We implement some of the projects ourselves and partner with local organisations for some. As a result, we reach more children with sustainable projects that are owned locally.
Children in Ethiopia are growing up in one of the world's poorest countries. Most Ethiopians still earn a living from the land, and even in a good year millions of families cannot produce enough food. In years of bad harvests, hunger quickly escalates into food crises with widespread malnutrition. This is made worse by lack of access to services such as healthcare, education, water and sanitation. In addition, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is sweeping Ethiopia; it has the world's third highest number of people infected with HIV. Harmful traditional practices like early marriage and female genital mutilation are widespread.
Save the Children's programs address food security, education, health, nutrition, poverty alleviation, HIV/AIDS, exploitation and abuse, children's rights, harmful traditional practices, discrimination against girls and children with disabilities, and refugees. We also provide relief assistance when needed.
