Save the Children Canada has established a registered office in Ethiopia beginning 2004. It has started an innovative program that will contribute to alleviating the negative situation of orphans and other children vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. The project emphasizes the realization of these children's rights to health, safety and care as outlined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child. It directly works with local civil society organisations to involve children and youth as active players in the development of HIV/AIDS initiatives meant to benefit them. The main project focus is the prevention of HIV/AIDS infection and the protection of children orphaned through provision of basic health, education and psychosocial support services.
Save the Children Canada is serving as a lead agency for coalition of Canadian NGOs (CARE and Plan) to implement the above project in the context of collaborative approach to mitigate the negative impact of HIV/AIDS with primary target of the youth in Ethiopia.
Save the Children Canada, through its strong alliance with Save the Children UK, has been engaged in the implementation of the CIDA funded Institutional Support Project (ISP). This project has been operational since 1998 and focuses on strengthening the Government's capacity to plan and respond to disasters and works with the government Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Commission (DPPC) at the federal, regional, zonal and woreda levels to enhance their ability to prevent, prepare for and respond to negative impact of food shortages.
Save the Children Canada is also supporting a school feeding project initiative for about 2000 school children in the South Wollo zone of the Amhara Regional State.
Through these initiatives, Save the Children Canada has been making a major contribution in ensuring children's survival and their development in Ethiopia.
The total annual financial allocation of Save the Children Canada for the program implementation in Ethiopia is about Birr 8,000,000 (Eight million Ethiopian Birr).
Four local civil society organisations that operate in more than eight woreda of the Amhara and Oromiya Regional States are financially and technically supported to implement the prevention of HIV/AIDS infection, the protection of orphan children and provision of support services benefiting a total of 4,000 people.
Working with our partners, Save the Children Canada has contributed towards reduced vulnerability of Ethiopian children to disaster in areas considered high risk.
