Save the Children is the leading UK charity working to create a better world for children. We work in 70 countries helping children in the world's most impoverished communities. We are part of the International Save the Children Alliance which aims to be a truly international movement for children.

Save the Children in Ethiopia:
We go back a long way, to the 1930s, but we set up a permanent programme in the 1970s.This meant we were able to play our part in responding to the big famine of 1984-5. Over the years the focus of our work has changed from emergency relief to long-term development. But we're always ready to respond whenever an emergency situation arises. Last year, we provided supplementary food to more than 5,800 children affected by floods in Amhara region, and gave non-food items such as blankets to 15,800 people.
We work in Afar, Amhara and Somali regions, with government, local communities and other agencies. We help rural families get enough food to last them all year round. We're improving the quality of healthcare available to some of the poorest people. We're helping children who can't go to primary school get an alternative basic education. And we're raising awareness of HIV and AIDS, as well as giving practical help to children and families affected by the epidemic.
