This report, released in 1998 arose out of the concern of Save the Children Fiji (SC Fiji) to identify the extent of the problem of school drop- outs in Fiji, the reasons behind it and the appropriateness in SC Fiji’s programmes in addressing the problems these children and their families face.
Study on the Impacts of the Political Crisis on Children and Families in Fiji
In 1995, the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child recommended that Fiji establish a comprehensive system of collecting disaggregated data in order to more effectively monitor children’s status in all areas covered by the Convention, especially to disadvantaged groups of children . The political crisis of May 2000 catapulted the country into an economic downturn with untold and primarily negative consequences for children. This study was commissioned by the National Children’s Coordinating Committee (NCCC) and conducted by SC Fiji.
Commercial Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse of Children in Fiji:
A situational Analysis
This Study is a joint project between Save the Children, Fiji and the United Nations Economic and Social Committee (UNESCAP) for Asia/Pacific. The study attempts to ascertain the prevalence and knowledge of Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC) and Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) in Fiji. It is the first of its kind for Fiji; results strongly indicate the current sexual exploitation and abuse situation warrant much further study of this issue.
