Norway

Save the Children Norway started working in Nepal since 1984 under a General Agreement signed with the Social Welfare Council (SWC). Its major intervention till 1998 was for the child centered community development projects in rural and urban districts. With its experience of direct implementation of these child centered community development projects for more than a decade, Save the Children Norway shifted its strategy from 'self-implementation of projects' to 'working with local organizations as partners.

Save the Children Norway's main objectives are to:

  • promote and increase understanding and acceptance of children's rights as defined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, signed and ratified by Nepal in 1990;
  • increase the number of children (especially girls) who experience positive early childhood development and fullfilment of their right to an appropriate basic education;
  • oppose conditions causing the negative economic exploitation of children and which hinder children's rights to education and development;
  • oppose conditions causing the sexual exploitation and abuse of children; and
  • promote the rights of children with disabilities and to contribute to building capacity to realise their rights.
