Save the Children UK began working in Nepal in 1975. It envisages working towards the development of a society that acts constructively in a rapidly changing world. With this vision in mind it will work towards (1) the development of effective institutions which can promote and protect children's rights and are committed to doing so, and (2) a broad national sensitivity and commitment to the development of all Nepalese children and increased clarity as to how this can be achieved. The nature of the projects are based on child rights based programming derived from rights based development. As a child rights based development organisation, the central focus of Save the Children UK is on child participation by empowering them to put their voices collectively.

Save the Children UK works in the following areas:

  • Improve access to quality primary and basic education, primarily for those excluded because of caste, gender, disability, rapid urbanisation or geographical isolation.
  • Demonstrate - to communities, NGOs, donors and the government - that important spaces can become safe for girls.
  • Reduce the potential impact of the emerging threat of HIV/AIDS on children's lives in Nepal.
  • Work with government and civil society institutions - including children's organisations - to ensure the effective implementation of, and to extend the scope of, key provisions within the Nepal Children's Act.
