In Romania there are almost 60.000 disabled children that are living in families and about 1000 institutionalized children. They can't enjoy their rights, because there are only a few services that support disabled children families, access to information, education, recuperation, community life being extremely reduce, one of the major need being the accessibility.
For offering those children a chance to social integration, Save the Children involved in the development of some projects for facilitating the recuperation of the disabled children and their education.
In Tecuci, in the Recuperation Center of the Neuro-motor and Associated Disabilities, was found by Save the Children in 1995, disabled children benefit of treatment, and in David Austin House in Munteni live 40 disabled children.
Those centers created by Save the Children were taken over of General Direction of Social Assistance and Child Protection Galati and they are continuing the activity in partnership.
Save the Children ran awareness campaigns for public opinion and authorities on the problems that disabled children must face and is developing a lobby activity about respecting children rights.
Also, a project that aims "The Respect of disabled children's right to education", developed by Save the Children in partnership with ASCHFR and Sense International Romania, pointed out in a small research the numerous problems that disabled children and their families are confronting with at the entrance to an inclusive education. There were elaborated plans of measures for improving this situation for the following districts: Brasov, Cluj, Constanta, Dolj, Prahova, Suceava, Timis and Bucharest.
