Countries on the frontline of the hunger crisis have a limit, and for many, this has been exceeded. All progress made in recent decades is now being reversed. Parts of Somalia are projected to face famine in the next 3 months, as the country experiences its worst drought ever. 

The lives of thousands of children in Somalia are at risk. If we wait until famine is declared in the country, it will be too late. Already, more than 350,000 children face severe malnutrition, hospitals are overwhelmed. This is life-threatening if left untreated.

Children are lacking the food and water they need. Children like Guled* need your support to make it through this drought.

What we’re doing and how you can help:

We are working around the clock to support families with food, cash, and supplies so children have access to nutritious food. We are working with partners to help communities spot early warning signs and take the necessary measures to prevent hunger.  We are supporting children like Guled* to get the food they need to survive. How your donation can help:

   · $20 can provide a child with basic healthcare during a humanitarian crisis, including vaccinations and treatment for deadly diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, and diarrhoea.

   · $70 could pay for a 7kg bag of seed for a family so they can grow food for a year

   · $220 could provide a child with severe acute malnutrition with life-saving care at a Save the Children treatment centre.

We have worked in Somalia since 1951. This year alone, Save the Children has reached more than 24,000 people through cash programming and treated more than 50,000 children for malnutrition. We are currently providing water to more than 25,000 households and unconditional cash provisions to nearly 11,000 households in the worst-affected areas.

Our hunger and nutrition programmes help millions every year. But we can’t do it alone.

This is not just happening in Somalia, but also across the entire Horn of Africa is facing a hunger crisis. A fourth season of failed rains is causing the worst drought in 40 years. We are witnessing the impact of the climate crisis right before our eyes. The situation is exacerbated by the war in Ukraine increasing food prices, making staples unaffordable for hundreds of thousands of families… As you read this, one person is likely to die of hunger every 48 seconds.

What does Famine mean?

Famine is determined by a UN five-point scale known as the Integrated Phase Classification (IPC) system and is usually the outcome of multiple factors that can include drought, conflict, disease and government policies.  

A famine, or IPC Phase 5, is declared when at least 20% of households face extreme food shortages, at least 30% of children are suffering from acute malnutrition, and two people for every 10,000 die each day due to starvation or the interaction of malnutrition and disease.
