Over 4,000 living in temporary shelters as volcano in Guatemala continues to smoke

Across 21 emergency shelters in Guatemala, families are struggling in the aftermath of the two volcanic eruptions that have caused 99 deaths and left almost 200 missing. 

At least 4,100 are now living in shelters—nearly 50 percent of whom are children. 

Save the Children's staff on the ground have reported today that the volcano is still regularly spewing ash and lava, and many fear another eruption.

Panic and confusion as third major earthquake strikes Mexico in less than three weeks

Hundreds of children are spending another night out in the open, in makeshift camps and shelters or in the street, too scared to return home for fear of another tremor. It follows the latest 6.1 magnitude quake in the southern state of Oaxaca on Saturday morning, the third in just over two weeks.   

Buildings already damaged by two previous quakes (on September 7 in Oaxaca and September 19 in Puebla/Morelos) are at increased risk of collapsing following the latest tremor.

Potential cholera catastrophe in Haiti threatens thousands of children, warns Save the Children

As the death toll in Haiti from Hurricane Mathew continues to mount by the hour, Save the Children has joined the ministry of health, other major humanitarian aid organizations and UN agencies in calling for an expedited response to the disaster, including providing immediate relief supplies to head off a catastrophic outbreak of cholera.
