Inger Ashing

Chief Executive Officer

Inger Ashing is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Save the Children International - the world´s largest independent organisation working to ensure every child survives, learns and is protected. A respected child rights activist, she set up her own youth organisation at the age of 12, working against racism and violence at county level. She has been associated with Save the Children for more than 25 years.

Previously Inger was Director General at the Swedish Agency against Segregation, a Swedish government agency to reduce segregation and social inequality. She has served as the National Coordinator for Youth Not in Education or Employment, Deputy Director General of the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society and the CEO of the Global Child Forum. Inger is also a member of the Ethics Council at The Swedish Migration ;Agency.

She has been an expert to and board member of several authorities and committees such as the Delegation for Human Rights, the Swedish National Knowledge Centre on Violence against Children, the Delegation for the Employment of Young People and Newly Arrived Migrants, the Swedish Enforcement Authority, the National Board of Institutional Care, and the Monitoring Committee for The European Social Fund.

She served as Chair of ‘Joining Forces’ - an alliance of the six largest child-focused international NGOs, is a Principal for the Steering Committee for Humanitarian Response (SCHR) and was appointed by United Nations Secretary-General as a member of the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Lead Group. She is a Founder Director on the Board of Save the Children Global Ventures to leverage new finance models and catalyse private sector investment with the goal of transforming the lives of the world’s most disadvantaged children and their communities.

The Save the Children International Board manages the business of the charity, ensures that all activities are within UK law and agreed charitable objects and is responsible for the oversight of, and agreeing the financial plan for, international programmes. They are drawn from a wide field of experience, including children's rights, healthcare, strategy, law and business.

Angela Ahrendts

ANGELA AHRENDTS

Board chair

Angela Ahrendts DBE was most recently Senior Vice President, Apple Retail based in Cupertino, CA. During her five years with Apple, she integrated the company's physical and digital businesses to create a seamless customer journey for over a billion visitors a year. Under her leadership, she redesigned the stores, recrafted the roles for 70,000 employees globally, and reimagined the retail experience with the launch of a transformative educational program focused on coding, music creation and the arts.  Prior to Apple, Angela was Chief Executive Officer of Burberry Group plc for nearly nine years in London. She led the 150-year-old British fashion house through a period of phenomenal global growth, repositioning Burberry as a global luxury brand. Her unique leadership style and focus on culture, values and purpose tripled the business and quadrupled the share price. During her tenure, she was a member of the UK's Prime Minister's Business Advisory Council and was named Honorary Dame Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.  Before Burberry, Angela spent 25 years in New York serving as Executive Vice President, at LCI Inc., where she oversaw the acquisition and integration of over 25 brands. For nearly eight years preceding this, Angela was President, Donna Karan International at the height of their global expansion and IPO.

Angela is currently on the Board of Ralph Lauren Corporation., Airbnb, Inc., WPP plc, and is Senior Operating Adviser, SKKY Partners. She is also on the non-profit boards of Charity: Water and The HOW Institute for Society and is a member of Paul Polman's Imagine CEO Circle.  Angela is also a member of the Global Leadership Council of the Oxford University Saïd Business School and the British American Business Advisory Board.

Angela has consistently been recognized by Forbes, Fortune and the BBC as a Top 100 Global Executive. In 2010, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and a Bachelor of Arts from her alma mater, Ball State University.  In 2019, Angela was honoured with an Indiana Living Legends award.

In January 2021, Angela became Chair of the SCA/SCI Boards.

He previously built the growth equity investment platform for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen’s Vulcan Capital, where he served as Managing Director and Global Head of Growth Equity, driving the firm’s private investments in the internet, software, and technology sectors globally. He has led Vulcan's investments into marquee companies including Alibaba, Flipkart, Grab, Intercom, Spotify, TraceLink, TrueCar, Uber and Zuora among others. He also served as interim Chief Investment Officer of Vulcan Capital for several years, responsible for the investment portfolio across both public and private securities. Previously, Abhishek was at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where he drove growth buyouts and minority growth investments in the internet and technology space, and with Lazard Technology Partners, an internet and technology-focused venture capital firm. Abhishek Agrawal is an internet, software and technology investor. Anne Gates

Appointed Director - Save the Children US

Anne Gates is the former president of MGA Entertainment, the largest privately held global toy company in the United States.  Before MGA, she spent more than twenty years at the Walt Disney Company, in various roles including Executive Vice President and CFO of the Consumer Products Division, based in Los Angeles, and Managing Director for Consumer Products Europe and Emerging Markets, based in London. In 2010, Anne Gates was named to the Power List of Britain's 100 most influential Black people. Earlier in her career, she worked in both the US and Europe for PepsiCo, Bear Stearns (Investment Banking), AT&T (Marketing) and Bell Labs (Research).

Currently, Anne is an active board director, spanning diverse industries. She is currently the Chair of the Tapestry Board (an S&P 500 company) and Chair of the Audit Committees at Kroger, and Cynosure (a Clayton, Dubilier & Rice owned company). She also serves as chair of the Governance and ESG committees for Tapestry and Raymond James Financial.

Anne is personally committed to the not-for-profit sector, focusing on improving education, equity, inclusion, and effective nonprofit financial stewardship. She engages with multiple nonprofit boards aligned with these goals. She is a member of the board of Salzburg Global Seminar, an organization convening leaders across cultures, generations, and industries, to encourage new thinking, inspire action, and create just and sustainable change. At Salzburg, she is Chair of the Board's DEI Working Group. At Public Media Group SoCal (the major PBS affiliate in Southern California), she serves as the Vice Chair of the Board, and Chair of the Investment Committee.

Anne is a member of the Save the Children US Board of Trustees.  

Anne joined the SCA/SCI Boards in 2023.  She is a member of the Audit and Risk, and Governance Committees.

Brad Irwin

Appointed Director - Save the Children US

Brad Irwin is the former President & CEO of Welch Foods, a privately held grower owned cooperative best known for grape juice and jelly.  Brad retired from Welch's at the end of 2018 after almost 10 years in the role. Prior to Welch's, Brad was at Cadbury Schweppes for 10 years as President, Cadbury North America from 2003-2018 and President of Mott's Inc. from 2000-2003. For the previous 20 years, Brad had roles in marketing and general management in the U.S. and overseas with Procter & Gamble.

In terms of board experience, Brad has been a member of the Board of Directors of Church & Dwight, a consumer-packaged goods company in the household and personal products categories since 2006. He was Lead Director from 2019-2022. In 2022, Brad joined the Board of Bay State Milling, a private grain milling company in Quincy MA. Brad joined the Save the Children Board of Trustees in 2003 and served chair of the Board since 2018. He earned his B.A. in Economics and Political Science at Amherst College.

Deepak Kapoor

Member Elected Director

Deepak Kapoor is an India-based executive who was previously Chairman and CEO of PwC India.  He is founder of the PwC India Foundation which has carried out major rehabilitation work in Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Chennai and Nepal. He is a Fellow Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), Fellow Member of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and Member of the Institute of Certified Fraud Examiners, USA.

Deepak is Chair of Bal Raksha Bharat, Save the Children India.

Deepak joined the SCA/SCI Board in 2022.  He is Chair of the Finance Committee.

Jon Lomøy

Appointed Director - Save the Children Norway

Jon Lomøy is former Director General of the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation where he held several management positions over the years. He is also former Director of the Development Cooperation Directorate at OECD.

Jon has also served as Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania and Zambia, and Deputy Director General for the Regional Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, leading the policy work on Norway's bilateral aid.

Jon has served as Board member at the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and on the Board of GFAMT. He is presently Board member at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo, co-Chair at GLAD (Global Action on Disability) and Board Chair of ATscale.  Jon holds a Cand. Polit. with a major in human geography. His thesis dealt with rural development and welfare in Kigoma, Tanzania, using child nutrition as a welfare indicator.

Jon is a Board Member of SC Norway.  He joined the SCA/SCI Boards in 2021 and chairs the Governance and Nominations Committees.

Joon Oh has dedicated his career to advancing the rights of children and marginalized groups both in Korea and globally. He is President of the Korea Council of Children's Organizations. He teaches at Kyung Hee University as an Eminent Scholar Professor of United Nations Studies and at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management as a Visiting Professor. He is also a member of the International Development Cooperation Committee, chaired by the Korean Prime Minister. He previously served as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations and as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Joon Oh is Chair of Save the Children Korea. Joon Oh served on the SCA/SCI Boards from 2019 to 2021 and was re-elected in 2025. He is a member of the Governance and Nominations Committees.

Joon Oh has dedicated his career to advancing the rights of children and marginalized groups both in Korea and globally.    

He is President of the Korea Council of Children's Organizations. He teaches at Kyung Hee University as an Eminent Scholar Professor of United Nations Studies and at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management as a Visiting Professor. He is also a member of the International Development Cooperation Committee, chaired by the Korean Prime Minister. He previously served as the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations and as President of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Joon Oh is Chair of Save the Children Korea.

Joon Oh served on the SCA/SCI Boards from 2019 to 2021 and was re-elected in 2025.  He is a member of the Governance and Nominations Committees.

Larry Kamener

Member Elected Director

Larry Kamener is a Senior Adviser in the Melbourne office of the Boston Consulting Group having worked with BCG from 1989 to 2019.  He is the founder and former leader of BCG's Global Public Sector Practice and the founder and Chair of BCG's Centre for Public Impact.

Larry is a founding board member of Teach for Australia (part of the Teach for All Network) and Board member of the Melbourne Theatre Company.

Larry serves as Chair of Save the Children Australia.

Larry joined the SCA/ACI Boards in 2022.  He is a member of the Finance Committee.

Lars Heikensten

Appointed Director - Save the Children Sweden

Lars Heikensten is a Swedish Economist with a PhD from the Stockholm School of Economics. He has a broad professional background having worked in academia as a teacher and researcher, in Government as Director General in the Ministry of Finance and Governor of the Central Bank, and in the private sector as Chief Economist at Handelsbanken. Lars has always had an interest in international affairs and has been the Swedish representative in organizations such as the European Central Bank, Bank of International Settlements, and the International Monetary Fund. He was also the Swedish Member of the European Court of Auditors for five years.

Lars has always had an interest in development issues and has written books on the topic. When the Swedish Government set up a board for externally evaluating its foreign aid, he was chosen to be its first Chairman. He has also served on the Board of two NGOs dealing with international youth exchanges and education. Lars' most recent executive position was as CEO of the Nobel Foundation, the organization with overall responsibility for the Nobel Prize.

Currently, Lars serves on a number of boards, including as Chairman of the Swedish Fiscal Policy Council.

Lars joined the SC Sweden Board in November 2022.

Lars also joined the SCA/SCI Boards November 2022.  He serves on the Governance and Nominations Committees.

MARGARET MCGETRICK

Appointed Director - Save the Children US

Margaret (Peg) McGetrick is a director and former CEO of Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co.   She was a founding partner of Liberty Square Asset Management (1998-2014) and before that a Partner of Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co where she led the International Equity division (1985-1996). Peg began her investment career in non-US equities as an analyst for The Commonfund for International Investments. She has also served on the Investment Committee for Partners Healthcare System (2010-2019).

She was previously on the Board and Investment committees of several educational institutions including Providence College, The Wheeler School, Friends Academy and Our Sister School. Peg graduated from Providence College with a BS in Psychology and Business Management and holds a MS in Finance from Fairfield University. Peg resides in New York City and South Dartmouth, MA.

Peg serves on the Board of Trustees for Save the Children US where she is the Chair of the Finance and Investment Committees.  Peg joined the SCA/SCI Board in 2020.  She is the Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee.

Dr Raffaele Salinari

Dr Raffaele Salinari is a medical doctor specialised in emergency surgery, first aid, obstetrics, and gynaecology.   He has worked for over twenty years in the Middle East (West Bank and Gaza, Syria), Asia (Viet-Nam, Thailand), Africa (Zaire, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Ruanda, São Tomé, Tanzania) and Latin America (Bolivia, Peru) as emergency surgeon and health development expert for international NGOs and UN agencies (UNICEF, WHO, UNHCR).

A representative for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Development from 1984 to 1989 in Zaire, he was responsible for Italy concerning the Special Program on HIV for central Africa between 1984 and 1986.

Professor of History of International Development Cooperation and Project Cycle Management for over 25 years at the Universities of Urbino, Bologna, Parma, and in several Masters in Tarragona (Spain), Tunis (Tunisia), La Paz (Bolivia) and Science Po Paris (France). He has been chairperson of COCIS, the Italian coordination of NGOs from 1990 to 2000, and chairperson of Terre des Hommes International Federation from 2001 to 2015.

Richard Winter CBE

Appointed Director - Save the Children UK

Richard Winter was formerly a partner at PwC. He was Global Assurance Risk & Quality Leader with responsibility for the network's assurance risk, quality and technical functions. Prior to this, he was on the UK Assurance Executive, and headed the firm's Capital Market, Accounting Advisory and Structuring practice. He also has had audit responsibilities as a partner on a number of FTSE 100 clients.

Richard has experience as a trustee of a number of charitable organisations and was appointed CBE for voluntary service to International Development through Save the Children and Merlin in the 2017 New Year's honours.

Richard is Vice Chair of Save the Children UK.

Richard joined the SCA/SCI Board in 2023 and serves on the Audit and Risk, and Finance Committees.

Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani

Rolake Akinkugbe-Filani is an investor relations and corporate finance executive focused on innovative infrastructure and funding solutions for Africa's economies, children and underserved communities.  She has held senior executive roles in infrastructure development, development finance, and investment banking and risk consulting, including with IFU, the Danish Investment Fund, where she advised on climate and energy investments in Africa.  She sits on the global advisory board of Persistent Energy that invests in climate neutral economic development in Africa.

Rolake was named a Young Economic Leader in Africa under 40, by the Choiseul Institute of France (2018, 2019 & 2020) she was also listed in the Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) 100 Under 40 in the 2018 Business Category.

Rolake joined the SCA/SCI Boards in 2022 and is a member of the Audit and Risk, and People and Organisation Committees.

Roy Caple Hernandez

Roy Caple Hernandez has over 30 years' experience designing and managing public affairs and communications strategy for private, public and non-governmental organisations throughout the Americas. He was CEO of several communications firms in Latin America, and his expertise has focused on advising leaders, CEOs, Executive Committees and management on strategy, reputation, organisational structures, public affairs and communications campaigns, as well as crisis management and corporate responsibility.

In addition to Save the Children, Roy has also served on the board of NGOs that focus on HIV awareness and prevention, as well as strengthening education. Roy has been a Board Member for Save the Children in Mexico since 2008, its Vice Chair since 2015, overseeing Governance issues and participating in the Development, Planning, Programs, Governance and Talent committees.

Roy joined the SCA/SCI Boards in 2018.  He serves as Vice Chair, chairs the People and Organisation Committee and is the designated Child Safeguarding Trustee.

TERESA MBAGAYA

Member Elected Director

Teresa Mbagaya is a Principal at Imaginable Futures, a global impact investment firm and a venture of The Omidyar Group. Her career has impacted millions through nation-wide initiatives centered on digital education transformation and youth skills development. She was previously the Education Lead for Microsoft in East and Southern Africa, leading the deployment and implementation of learning solutions across 10 countries. As the Head of Econet Education, Teresa drove the development of Zimbabwe's first digital education platform.

Teresa is a 2021 Archbishop Tutu Fellow and a 2019 Obama Foundation Leader. She has been listed as one of 30 Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs in Africa by Forbes and was named on the Choiseul 100 Africa – The Economic Leaders for Tomorrow rankings in 2021 and 2022.

Teresa serves on the boards of Generation Kenya, Brink Foundation CIC, and has served on the advisory boards of Village Capital Communities Africa, and the Global Education Platform, under the UN Special Envoy for Global Education.

Teresa is a Founding Director of Save the Children Global Ventures.

Dr Tsitsi Chawatama-Kwambana Tsitsi is a Consultant Paediatrician at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust and brings a wealth of knowledge to the Board as an expert in Global Child Health. She has worked extensively in the NGO and development sector with expertise in strategic planning, program delivery and capacity building through training health workers. Tsitsi is a trustee of Sentebale, a charity co-founded by Prince Seeiso of Lesotho and the Duke of Sussex to support vulnerable children in Lesotho and Botswana and is a member trustee of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH). She was Vice-chair of AFRUCA-Safeguarding Children, which promotes the protection of children from ethnic minority communities in the UK, Europe and Africa and, a safeguarding trustee of UK-Med which responds to health emergency responses around the world. Tsitsi also brings invaluable lived experience of the Global South having spent her formative years in Zimbabwe and as a clinician in development work in Ethiopia and Southern Africa.

Dr Tsitsi Chawatama-Kwambana

Dr Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho headshot for SCI website Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho is a global health leader, serving as a Global Trustee and Global Board Member of Save the Children International and Save the Children Association. She previously held the position of Assistant Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO) for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria, and Neglected Tropical Diseases. In this role, she led efforts in prevention, control, impact mitigation, country support, inter-country collaboration, and global partnerships. Dr. Mpanju-Shumbusho was instrumental in mobilizing political commitment, resources, and action to combat HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria, and neglected tropical diseases, as well as in strengthening resilient health systems. Her work includes significant contributions to the founding, governance, and effectiveness of the Global Fund. Currently, Dr. Mpanju-Shumbusho serves as the Board Chair of Uniting to Combat Neglected Tropical Diseases. She is also a member of the High-Level Panel for the Global Public Health Convention, a Board Member of the University of California San Francisco Institute for Global Health Sciences MEI, and Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Disability and Health. She a former Board Chair of the RBM Global Partnership to End Malaria and Co-Chair of the Lancet Commission on Malaria Eradication. She served on various international Boards, including the Global Fund, UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board, UNITAID Board, the International Corporate Health Leadership Council, and Tanzania Water Authority. She is also Co-Founder and Advisory Board Member of Adventures in Health, Education, and Agricultural Development (AHEAD Inc) and Founder of AHEAD Tanzania. Dr. Mpanju-Shumbusho holds a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Dar-es-Salaam (UDSM), a Master of Public Health (MPH) from Tulane University in New Orleans, USA, and a Master of Medicine (M.MED) in Pediatrics and Child Health from UDSM. She is a Hubert H. Humphrey North-South Fellowship (Fulbright Scholarship) alumnus.

Dr. Winnie Mpanju-Shumbusho is a global health leader.
