While schools have largely remained closed, since January 2024, our teams have continued providing essential learning services and materials to hundreds of thousands of children. These are classes specifically designed to help children who have had their education disrupted, to catch up and continue their learning and development informally while formal education opportunities are out of reach. Additionally, We’re currently supporting 400 schools across the country supporting children through formal and non-formal education.

Impact of Conflict

  • An estimated 8 million school-age children are missing prolonged schooling due to conflict.

  • 10.8 million children need education support due to conflict disruption.

  • It's estimated over 1,800 schools remain in use as shelters for internally displaced persons or occupied by armed groups.

  • Attacks on education facilities, including looting, destruction and use by armed groups are still happening across Sudan.

  • A total of 13,220 schools are now operational out of 19,390 nationwide, representing approximately 68 per cent of all schools.

Our Response

Save the Children is supporting children to continue learning wherever possible, even as the education system has been devastated by the conflict:

  • Supporting schools and learning spaces, providing learning materials, and setting up temporary education activities in areas hosting displaced families.
  • Our education programmes are designed to provide children not only with learning opportunities, but also with safe, structured spaces that support their wellbeing and protection.
  • We have established accelerated learning programme (ALP) Centers designed to help children with disrupted education to catch up and continue learning informally when formal education is inaccessible.
  • We are providing rigorous training initiatives, including literacy and numeracy boosts, psychosocial support, gender-based violence awareness, children's rights, and violence-free learning environments.
