CHILD SAFEGUARDINGLevel 3: the post holder will have contact with children and/or young people because of the nature of role. This may be but not limited to visiting field programmes; or because he or she is responsible for implementing Save the Children’s programmes.
ROLE PURPOSEUnder the supervision and technical support of the Child Protection/Case Management Officer, the Child Protection Assistant will give support in identifying, documenting and responding to child protection cases of vulnerable and at risk children to access basic services and receive other support as required. The assistant will monitor, conduct case by case follow ups and facilitate the alternative care and reunification process of unaccompanied and separated children. He/she will take lead in identification of cases for children with protection concerns using the customized Case Management forms, including the Best Interest Assessment and Best Interest Determination forms.In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.

We help them fulfil their potential.Role Dimensions: This role will contribute towards Save the Children’s Child Protection strategic objective that Promoting community knowledge and ownership to protect children at risk in Maban Camps, South Sudan and towards Save the Children’s global breakthrough 2030 ‘Violence against children is no longer tolerated’. This is a challenging role in a complex environment. It requires a dedicated and highly motivated individual who can manage the difficulties of working in such an environment and still be fundamental in helping to drive forward our programmes and our ambitions.
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
- Identify, document support children and families in need of individual support, including but not limited to separated and unaccompanied minors.
- In case of separated and unaccompanied children, document according to the standard family tracing and reunification procedures and in line with Save the Children’s child safeguarding policy.
- Refer cases with specific needs to the competent service providers, follow up and document referred cases.
- Ensure that urgent and challenging cases are immediately discussed with direct supervisors.
- Conduct follow-up and monitoring visits and provide psychological first aid or other support, depending on the child’s needs.
- Establish and support community based mechanisms, including selection, training and mentoring of community volunteers
- Responsible for the coordination between community-based volunteers and SCI.
- Conduct community awareness on child protection concerns, identification of vulnerable children and the process of registration of separated/unaccompanied children including family tracing.
- Conduct community consultation on temporary care arrangements of separated/unaccompanied children.
- Work with cultural sensitivity and respect the dignity of vulnerable children, youth and families
- Conduct meetings and focus group discussions with beneficiaries (parents, children, and youth) on the delivery of services and support implementation of remedial measures on gaps identified.
- Registers information collected through appropriate reporting tools and report this information to CYP officer/ Case management officer.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLSEssential:
- Diploma in social work or community development or equivalent
- At least 2 years’ experience working with children and/or youth
- Good understanding of children rights and other human rights legal instruments
- Proven knowledge in children and youth protection
- Familiar with community based approaches
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Fluent in spoken basic/Juba Arabic
- Ability to conduct outreach at the community level.
- Possess positive interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to work to tight deadlines and under pressure.
- Desirable:
- Experience in designing and facilitating community level training sessions
- Basic computer skills
- Team player
