Save the Children Helps Children Leave Street Work and Return to School

14 May 2026 Afghanistan

Through targeted support to 196 households, Save the Children, with funding from SOS Children on the Move, helped children leave hazardous work, return to learning, and begin building safer and more hopeful futures.

In northern Afghanistan, economic pressures have pushed some children into street work, placing their education at risk. Through targeted support to 196 households, Save the Children with funding support from SOS (Children on the Move) has helped children move away from hazardous work and return to learning.

Children were enrolled in Child Care Centres, while families received livelihood support to strengthen household resilience. As a result, children stopped working on the streets, re-enrolled in school, and attended sessions with their families on positive parenting practices.

This work was delivered by Save the Children and its local partners, helping children build safer, more hopeful futures.

Wazhma*, a child from the Child Care Centre, said:

“I feel emotional because I am saying goodbye to the Child Protection Centre, but I am also happy because I am going back to school. Before, I had to work on the streets, but now I can study and build my future.”
