EDUCATION

Save the Children is committed to expanding equitable access to quality education for marginalized learners, including refugees, girls, and children with disabilities. Our education programmes focus on improving learning environments, strengthening teacher quality, and building resilient education systems that enable every child to learn and thrive.

Our work spans Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE), Foundational Learning, Basic Education, Accelerated Education Programmes, and Education in Emergencies. Across these programmes, we integrate climate-resilient education, digital innovation, and gender-responsive approaches to ensure learning remains inclusive, relevant, and sustainable.

Working closely with the Ministry of Education, county governments, schools, communities, and technology partners, we are strengthening inclusive, resilient, and high-quality education systems that give every child the opportunity to reach their full potential. 

In 2025, we reached a total of 15,098 children through our Early Childhood Development and Basic Education Programmes.

• Learning poverty is estimated at 79-83%, meaning most children cannot  read a simple text by age 10.
• Kenya faces a teacher shortage with high pupil-teacher ratios and pupil teacher ratios reaching 70:1 or higher in some ASAL and refugee context.
• 20-30% of children with disabilities are out of school, largely due to inaccessible infrastructure limited assistive devices, and insufficient teacher training in inclusive teacher training in inclusive education.
• Across Kenya, education systems face significant challenges including learning poverty, inequitable access to education, climate-related infrastructure, which disproportionately affect marginalised children
