"In the last 24 hours the number of people forced to flee Aleppo has surged to over 16,000 people - half of these children"
Aleppo, 7 January 2026 – Amid a rise in violence in Aleppo, in the last 24 hours there has been a 17 times increase of people fleeing the city. Many families remain in the city with limited access to food, clothing, or heating in near-freezing temperatures. Save the Children is preparing to scale up our response and support displaced people and those unable to leave.
In response to increased violence in Aleppo, Rasha Muhrez, Syria Country Director for Save the Children said:
“Tragically in new waves of violence in Syria one child has reportedly been killed in Aleppo just one month since the country celebrated the end to 14 years of conflict. Across the country 2.5 million children are already internally displaced and any rise in hostilities risks more children being forced from their homes. In the last 24 hours the number of people forced to flee Aleppo has surged to over 16,000 people - half of these children. Other families remain in their houses, with limited access to food, clothing or fuel for heating with nighttime temperatures as low as 1 degree Celsius.
“Save the Children is calling for all parties to immediately halt hostilities, to ensure the protection of all civilians from violence, especially children.
“For over a decade Save the Children has been working in Syria and we will continue to be there for children, distributing food, mattresses, heating fuel, blankets and warm clothes to keep displaced children and families warm during the cold winter weather. We call on increased funding to support us to deliver our vital work. We are working closely with partners to reach those that are unable to leave the city.”
