Three Years After the February 6 Earthquakes: Continuing to Strengthen Recovery and Resilience for Children in Türkİye

6 Feb 2026 Türkiye

As three years have passed since the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes that struck on February 6, 2023, the needs of children and families in the affected regions continue. The earthquakes triggered a large-scale humanitarian crisis, directly affecting 9.1 million people, including 2.5 million children and 1.7 million refugees. More than 50,000 lives were lost, 2.7 million people were displaced, and essential services were severely disrupted.

The February 6 earthquakes that occurred three years ago today profoundly affected the lives of millions of people. While recovery efforts are ongoing, the needs of children and families remain significant, making long-term and comprehensive support more critical than ever.

As Save the Children Türkiye, we have been working alongside our partners since the very first days of the earthquakes to create lasting and meaningful change in the affected regions. We continue to support children in growing up safe, healthy, able to access education, and resilient, while standing with families and communities throughout their recovery journey.

At the same time, through disaster risk reduction efforts implemented nationwide in collaboration with AFAD, the Ministry of National Education, and our local partners, we are working to ensure that children and communities are better prepared for future disasters.

On the third anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes, you can watch the video above featuring a message from our Country Director Berna Köroğlu and insights into our ongoing work in the field.
