MONICA HOPES FOR IMPROVED NUTRITION AND LIVELIHOOD THROUGH THE GOAT PROJECT

11 Sep 2025 Uganda

Funded by Save the Children Korea and implemented by Save the Children Uganda, the Karamoja GOATS project works to improve nutrition and livelihoods for vulnerable households in Moroto District. Launched in March 2021 and initially rolled out in Rupa and Tapac sub-counties, the project empowers women by providing goats and vegetable seeds, directly combating malnutrition. The first phase concluded in June 2024, successfully addressing immediate nutritional needs while laying the groundwork for long-term food security. Now in its second phase, the project is strengthening its impact and expanding support to reach more households.

Monica, 34 years and a mother from Kaleuro parish, Tapac sub-county in Moroto district. Monica is part of the 48 new beneficiaries of the life-changing Goat project. She was identified by Etata-Oyara group members in a gap filling exercise to receive a galla goat. With excitement and determination, Monica had already built a safe, clean shelter in anticipation of her new galla goat. Now, with the goat in her care, she’s committed to ensuring it thrives, feeding it well, and keeping it in a clean environment. She promises to work closely with the Community Animal Health Worker (CAHW) for proper treatment and care of her galla goat.

Monica knows that this opportunity doesn’t end with her she’s part of a bigger circle of Save the Children’s support. Through the “pass it on” strategy, Monica has pledged to give the first kid her goat produces to another mother in her community, helping more families grow stronger and more resilient despite the persistent drought.
