WHAT WE DO

Save the Children has been working, directly and through partners,  across Myanmar since 1995 while developing innovative programmes to help address the most critical issues impacting children nationwide. Our programmes include:    

  • Ensuring food security for children and families affected by crisis, while creating income-generating opportunities to support self-reliance and resilience during recovery.  
  • Providing opportunities for children affected by crisis to raise their voice about issues that affect them.  
  • Protecting children and families affected by crisis from preventable diseases and avoidable deaths by improving access to and utilisation of essential health, nutrition, and WASH services.  
  • Ensuring children receive continuous, quality education in a safe environment.  
  • Protecting children affected by crisis through support for their families and communities, with services tailored to meet their specific protection needs.

Health, Nutrition & WASH

Daw Ma Nyein*, 39, a mother of five children, left her village to seek shelter in an IDP camp in Kayah State, Myanmar, after the fighting escalated. She has been living in the camp for two months with her four children. Her husband stayed behind to guard their house and her eldest son joined the civilian defense force. Save the Children

Child Protection

Thuzar*,12 years old, lives in Northern Shan State with her grandmother, uncle, and elder cousin on her mother's side. Her mother works in China, and her father lives with his second family. Before moving to this grandmother’s house, Thuzar lived with her father's elder brother. During her stay there, Thuzar faced severe mistreatment, including physical abuse and being tied up. Out of fear, she could not sleep or eat properly. With injuries on her cheeks, thighs, and back, a member of a Civil Social Organization trained by Save the Children reported the abuse. Save the Children continued to follow up on Thuzar’s case, providing psychosocial support and positive parenting messages to her family. Thuzar also received psychosocial support from Save the Children for her emotional well-being. Northern Shan State, where Thuzar was born and raised, is a region marred by conflict, political instability, and economic struggles, along with issues related to drug abuse, trafficking, exploitation, discrimination, psychological distress, and more. Save the Children, understanding the dire need for protection in such areas, trained Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) through a Community-Led Child Protection (CLCP) programme. These community-led approaches foster strong community ownership, enable effective harm prevention, ensure sustainability, and reduce dependency on external aid. Save the Children Myanmar
