A Step Toward Overcoming Bullying: Mert*’s Journey - Adıyaman, Türkiye

25 Sep 2025 Türkiye

The earthquakes that struck on February 6, 2023, shook not only buildings but also emotions. In the aftermath, 12-year-old Mert* and his family relocated to a container settlement in Adıyaman. The new living conditions left Mert withdrawn, quiet, and struggling to connect with others. With support from Save the Children Türkiye and in partnership with Gökkuşağı Association, Mert began regularly attending Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) activities. Over time, he regained his self-confidence and learned to express his emotions.

Structured MHPSS sessions continue to take place in the child-friendly spaces established within the settlement. These sessions bring together children who have faced similar challenges, helping them rebuild trust, form friendships, and learn how to cope with bullying. Mert actively participated in these sessions. “I learned the steps to prevent bullying. Now I feel more knowledgeable and stronger,” he shared.

Once reserved and quiet, Mert is now more social, friendly, and peaceful. His awareness of bullying has grown, and he now avoids conflict and works through problems calmly. This positive change has extended beyond his peer relationships to his home life. His mother, Nilay* (38), said, “He learned how to express himself. These sessions were very helpful.” She added that he now enjoys reading, sharing what he learns, and spending time with his siblings.

Nilay* also observed an increase in bullying incidents among children living in the container settlement after the earthquake, as families from diverse backgrounds began living together. She emphasized the emotional toll and difficult conditions children have been facing. However, she noted visible improvements in Mert’s emotional well-being and behavior thanks to his regular participation in the sessions. “Each time he comes back happier and more confident,” she said, adding that he has also become more thoughtful and caring at home.

These activities are part of a broader program implemented by Save the Children Türkiye and Gökkuşağı Association in Hatay and Adıyaman . The program offers safe learning spaces, social-emotional development support, structured MHPSS sessions, and positive parenting trainings for caregivers.

Mert*’s transformation highlights the powerful impact of child-centered approaches and sustained psychosocial support. Thanks to the holistic services provided by Save the Children Türkiye, many children and families like Mert’s are once again looking to the future with hope.
