CASE STORY: YOUNG VOICE THAT CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

27 Mar 2026 Vietnam

Once hesitant to speak up for fear of saying something wrong, Vân - an 8th-grade student in Ho Chi Minh City - now confidently represents her peers sharing their views at the 2026 Children’s Voices Forum.

“Before, I often stayed silent. Now I believe my voice can contribute to positive change.”

Vân’s journey began at the Pink Club — where she not only learned how to protect herself online, but also to believe in herself and share her voice.

Vân, an 8th-grade student in Ho Chi Minh City, used to be a quiet listener rather than someone who spoke up. When faced with issues concerning herself or her community, she often chose silence, fearing that she might say something wrong, that she did not fully understand the issue, or that her voice would not make a difference.

Her turning point came when she joined the Pink Club at her school - a model under the project “Connecting and Providing Support Services to Ensure the Rights of Children in Special Circumstances in Ho Chi Minh City”, implemented by Save the Children in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Association for the Protection of Children’s Rights.

At the club, Vân and her peers learned about child rights, personal boundaries, self-protection skills, and how to navigate the online space safely. Yet the most significant change was not knowledge, it was confidence. From initially hesitant participation, Vân gradually became more comfortable sharing her thoughts, listening to diverse perspectives, and recognizing that every child’s experience holds value.

“Before, I was afraid of saying something wrong, so I stayed quiet. But after joining the club, I realized that every opinion deserves to be heard. I feel more confident now and believe that my voice can contribute to positive change,” Vân shared.

Her growth led her to become one of the child representatives participating in consultations for the Program on Protecting and Supporting Children in the Online Environment for the period 2026–2030. She also directly shared her perspectives at the Children’s Consultation Reception Ceremony and the 2026 Children’s Voices Forum.

At the forum, she reflected: “The forum was very meaningful and engaging. It helped me gain more skills to protect myself online. My group brought the message ‘Use AI wisely — don’t let AI use you’ to remind friends to use AI in a proactive and safe way.”

From a student hesitant to speak up, Vân now confidently represents her peers in presenting their ideas and recommendations for a safer digital environment.

Vân’s journey demonstrates that when children are provided with safe spaces and timely support, they are not only protected - they can also become leaders of positive change within their own communities.
