NEW RESPONSE ALERT | Strengthening the Fight Against Malaria

16 Oct 2025 Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is facing a sharp rise in malaria cases, with over 130,000 confirmed infections and 365 deaths recorded as of August 2025, as reported by the Ministry of Health and Childcare (MoHCC)— a 302% increase from the same period last year. The surge has placed pressure on the health systems, particularly in Mashonaland Central, Manicaland, and Mashonaland West, which account for most of the cases.

To complement the Ministry of Health and Child Care’s ongoing efforts to fight malaria, Save the Children through its Humanitarian Fund (HF), has launched the HF Malaria Response.

Implemented in partnership with the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), this joint response will target four malaria hotspot districts — Mbire, Muzarabani, Chipinge, and Chimanimani — aiming to reduce malaria-related illness and deaths while strengthening preparedness for Mpox and Cholera during the upcoming rainy season.

The six months long intervention will focus on:

  • Strengthening malaria case management, prevention, and surveillance in affected areas.

  • Enhancing community awareness and engagement on malaria prevention and early treatment-seeking.

  • Building anticipatory capacity for potential Mpox and Cholera outbreaks.

  • Reinforcing multi-sectoral coordination and monitoring for an integrated outbreak response.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to protecting children and families from preventable diseases and ensuring that communities are better equipped to face future health emergencies.
