One Save the Children staffer who was caught up in the violence has told a harrowing story of suffering and survival, following the repeated evacuations of towns across Akobo County in eastern Jonglei state since the start of the year. 

Escalating violence in South Sudan's Jonglei state has forced the withdrawal of aid agencies from key areas, triggering mass displacement and leaving families stranded and without essential and life-saving service.

Save the Children said it has suspended all operations in Walgak in Akobo Country and was pulling its 30 staff out of the area after its field office was burnt the ground and its Primary Health Care Centre (PHCC) destroyed, cutting off essential services for hundreds of children and families.

Save the Children, with funding from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), has launched a US$18.6  million project to strengthen climate resilience through education across South Sudan.

The latest IPC figures show that next April, between planting and harvesting, about 3.5 million children–53%–will be facing acute hunger, up from 42% currently.

At least five children with cholera in South Sudan have died on an arduous journey to seek medical treatment, after aid cuts forced their local health services to close in the middle of a major outbreak of the deadly disease, Save the Children said.

Dangerously high temperatures have forced schools across South Sudan to close for the second year in a row, putting learning out of reach for many children and pushing them further into risks like early marriage, child labour and recruitment into armed groups, Save the Children said. 

This includes more than 650,000 children expected to be facing the most deadly form of malnutrition – severe acute malnutrition -  a rise of 30% from 480,000.
