By 2015, approximately 83,698 refugees were entering Tanzania through Kigoma region due to the Burundi political crisis, majority of them were children and women. Save the Children has been implementing an integrated child Protection and Education program since May 2015 in Nyarugusu camp and since August 2016 in Nduta camp.

Currently, Save the children Tanzania is responding to humanitarian action implementing an integrated projects of child protection and education that aims at reducing suffering 

In refugees' response programme under child protection, we work to strengthen community Child protection mechanisms to be able to prevent and response to different forms of abuse at the community level.  

We also implement Mental health and psychosocial support through child friendly spaces with aim of help children and their families improve their psychosocial wellbeing.  

To respond to the learning needs of Burundian and Congolese refugee children, Save the Children has established eleven integrated Child Friendly Spaces (CFSs) and Early Childhood and Care and Development (ECCD) centers (six in Nyarugusu camp and five in Nduta Camp), eight formal and Alternative Basic Education learning centres (two in Nyarugusu and six in Nduta Camp).  

With the objective to increase access to quality, protective and equitable formal and alternative education for both boys and girls, Save the Children has been running the education program in both camps through the provision of teaching and learning materials, recruitment and training of teachers, strengthen community structures through back to learning campaign and training of Parent Teacher Association, provision of text book, classroom furniture, innovative educational approach using ideas box, strengthening school co-curricular activities, and strengthening education coordination both at the camp and Kigoma level.
