Save the Children Uganda, in partnership with We Care Solar officially handed over solar-powered lighting kits - We Share Solar Suitcases - to 39 schools [1] in Wakiso District. This initiative will benefit approximately 10,372 (5,189 girls/5,183 boys) children, providing them with a safe, and conducive learning environment enhanced by reliable light and a sustainable clean energy source to power learning devices.
Recognizing the critical role of sustainable energy in education, We Care Solar has donated Solar Suitcases to support schools struggling to access reliable electricity. These Solar Suitcases will provide essential lighting for classrooms and administrative offices, allowing learners more time for their studies and helping teachers during lesson preparation and other teacher related tasks.
The handover event took place at Kikusa Primary School in Kakiri brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Education and Sports, Wakiso District officials, school leaders, and children. The occasion marked a significant step toward addressing energy gaps in schools, particularly for learners in communities with limited access to electricity.
Famari Barro, Country Director of Save the Children Uganda, emphasized the impact of the project: “We are proud to partner with We Care Solar to bring sustainable lighting solutions to schools. Lighting is often an overlooked barrier to quality education. With these solar kits, we are making sure children can learn in safe, well-lit spaces, making education more accessible and effective. This initiative will not only improve learning conditions but also create safer, more inclusive education spaces for children. Through this partnership, we are reaching 10,372 children in 39 schools, ensuring they have the light they need to study and thrive.”
Phiona Abaho Bruce, We Care Solar’s Uganda Country Program Manager, echoed this commitment: “Access to electricity should not be a privilege but a right. By equipping these schools with solar energy, we are creating an environment where children can thrive academically.”
Beyond installation, Save the Children and We Care Solar will work closely with school leaders to ensure the long-term sustainability of the project. A comprehensive plan for Solar Suitcase maintenance and capacity building will be shared with stakeholders to guarantee lasting impact.
This partnership highlights the vital role of renewable energy in advancing education and aligns with Uganda’s Vision 2040 goal of ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education for all. By bridging gaps in education access and quality, Save the Children and We Care Solar reaffirm their commitment to innovative, child-focused solutions that empower learners and improve learning outcomes.
The handover ceremony also served as a platform for discussions on sustainability, ensuring that the benefits of the solar kits continue to transform education in Wakiso District for years to come.
